Three days ago I took the initiative to take a direction in my life. I bought a teardrop trailer off Craigslist. I'd been searching for about a month, considering picking one up as much as 1,000 miles away!
There wasn't a hitch on my 2008 Focus, so I figured this would be step one. I ordered a hitch, thinking that I could use it for my bike should I change my mind about the teardrop.
Quickly rigging some tail lights in the Walmart behind Barry's house |
Literally hours after installing it, I did my habitual search of Craigslist and this beauty appears. Not only that, but it's 30 minutes away from my house!
It is a very unique creation from a woodworker named Barry. He creates custom StarWars coffee tables in his spare time and made this a few years ago. It is based from no specific plan- he simply made some sketches and began building on-the-fly.
I took it to a truck stop and weighed it today. It comes to 860lbs. Without the handmade roof rack, it's 810 lbs. A bit much for a Ford Focus, but completely within towing capabilities.
I have a little buyers remorse setting in, but I'm determined to make something good come out of it. I will travel the country one way or the other. Trailer, or no trailer. At minimum I have a fun new toy or project to re-sell. Stay tuned for more on my adventure.
